Man’s best friend: Pet Ranch specialty pet store going Kingwood strong for 40 years

Offered By Local Influence, LLC

Over four decades in, Pet Ranch owners Kent and Jan Stevens know their customers, and their beloved animals, pretty well. The store recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, with 20 of those in their current location in King Crossing shopping center. It’s a business built on loyal customers and their pets that become part of their extended family.

“It’s an extremely rewarding business from the standpoint of everything involving pets, specifically dogs and cats,” Kent Stevens said. “People get new kittens and puppies, it’s a happy time. But you also go through the loss of the pet with your customer and you give them a shoulder to cry on. There’s a lot of personal relationships built.”

The specialty pet store is located in the heart of Kingwood and sells food, treats, toys, and over-the-counter medication for dogs and cats. It also offers a grooming service that has become so popular there is a three-month wait for appointments.

Jan’s parents, looking for a new business venture, started the original Pet Ranch in 1978 in Humble, specializing in selling small dog breeds and birds. They eventually expanded to more stores in Kingwood.

The venture proved so successful, customers flew in from as far as Colorado and Mexico due to the breeds they sold. Stevens estimates they sold around 13,000 dogs in their time as Pet Ranch owners.

After Kent and Jan got married, they decided to leave corporate America behind and take up the family business when Jan’s parents retired. Kent left a job with a national jewelry company and Jan moved on from an executive position with Hertz Rent-A-Car.

“My whole background was sales, so I brought a different perspective into the store,” Stevens said. “Eventually, her parents decided to retire and I bought the stores from them.”

The Stevens eventually consolidated the Pet Ranch stores into the King’s Crossing location. Pet Ranch evolved into the business it is today as the sales of pets moved away from pet stores to breeders, towards the sales of a variety of specialized pet food, unique treats, and fun toys. The store places special orders for customers based on their pet’s needs.

“People are now humanizing their pets and because of that, they want their pets to have a better, healthier life,” Stevens said. “With the new foods on the market, that’s what they are searching for – high in nutrition, better quality. Almost 100 percent of our foods and treats are made exclusively in the U.S.A.”

The familiarity with their customers over their long tenure in Kingwood allows the Stevens’ to retool their business to fit the buying patterns of those they see regularly. It also helps that they are pet owners too, having raised toy poodles over the last decade, with the “company CEO” mantle currently held by their black toy poodle, Cory.

“We are surrounded by a wonderful community that supports our store,” Stevens said. “We’re able to supply them with answers to their issues and problems, and we really go out of the way to make them feel like family.”
